What do you love about the town your home is in?
I love Columbus because it has a rural community but its close to the cities. All the lots in Columbus are acreage with great wide open spaces and trees/timber and will stay this way. You won't have to worry about apartment complexes going up next door. It has a small town environment- neighbors know each other, help each other out and watch over your house when you are gone. I never have to worry about whether I remembered to lock all my doors- in fact have frequently left without them all locked. You can trust this community. But I'm only 2 miles from the interstate and 30 minutes from either St. Paul or Minneapolis.
If you are in a neighborhood, what great things do you do there?
Columbus town hall is with in walking distance with all the ball fields and playground. Carlos Avery is close by and provides a true "back to nature" experience. All roads from my driveway are used daily by bikers, rollerbladers, joggers and walkers. Also see horse back riders frequently- several neighbors have horses. The monthly Columbus pancake breakfast is a must. My house was the neighborhood gathering place for bonfires, porch sitting, deck parties. Had annual 4th of July parties for friends/neighbors for many years- had up to 100 people to these parties and great space for all.
My favorite restaurants around this home are:
There is every fast food restaurant within 2 miles of my house, But Forest Lake also had Applebyes, Pizza Hut, Norman Quacks, Za, and many others. All quizines are within 3 miles .
Grocery stores I love to shop at?
Cub, Menards, Home Depot, Walmart, Target within 2 miles .
Key points about the property that I/we were drawn to?
When we bought the place we were attracted to the yard and especially the distance between neighbors- moved her from a large city in Iowa with houses 20-30 feet apart. Was really nice not to hear your neighbors conversation coming from their house, or smell what they were cooking for dinner. But it wasn't so large that you needed farm equipment to take care of it. However the best part of this house is the screened porch- or as I call it "the bug free deck" can sit out there and enjoy the evening without getting eaten alive by bugs. Cozy place for a hammock swing to read or nap. Friday night gathering with the neighbors for a beer or glass of wine
This house was a great place to raise 3 kids- 11 years apart in age. There's enough "living room" space that all the kids could have friends over at the same time and they all had their own space to hang out without getting into their siblings space.
Why people should move to this area; why I/we were attracted?
I love the quiet rural neighborhood. My house was the gathering place for all the neighborhood kids- yard big enough for all outdoor games: soccer, baseball, football volleyball and the paved driveway was also home to many "horse" basketball tournaments. Plus we still had space for that trampoline, croquet and bocce ball. And if it started to rain then the gang all moved to the porch.
Any great schools or other things to mention?
Forest Lake schools is why we chose this community when we moved from Iowa and I don't think you could find any better elementary school than Columbus Elementary. All 3 kids went to school from Columbus to Forest Lake High school. Teachers in all levels knew you by name, knew who your kids were and what they excelled at. Teachers really cared in all three levels of school (elementary, junior high, high school) .
Anything else you can think of to attract a potential buyer?
Love the private open space of the yard, A gardeners dream home. Lots of living space in the house- isn't an open floor plan but that was great when we had teenagers- they each had their own corner to go to and parents still had their own space too. So if someone was having a bad day- they had a quiet place to retreat to. But on family nights we had plenty of room to do things together- play cards, ping pong, board games or watch a movie.
What did you do for interests and hobbies near to the property?
I walk a dog daily- pick a different route every day so I can see the yards, flower beds, gardens, horses, People of Columbus take great pride in how their property/yards look. Have been horse back riding with neighbors, bike path is close by so I can go roller-blading. This path goes from North Branch to Hugo- so you can pick how many miles you want to go- all safe away from traffic.
And the cities are a short commute- I'm only 2 miles from Interstate 35.
