DIY Building Your Own Home

In this weekly blog I will show you the benefits and pitfalls I overcame in building both of the homes from  the ground up. Oddly  enough I built both homes before I was even in Real Estate.

First a little introduction I'm 43, live in the North Metro area of the Twin Cities MN, Married for 20 years and have seven kids with one more on the way in June :0

I guess this adventure begins when I was a Senior in High school (1990). Back then I was into Street Rodding and looking for the next great barn find. I found myself in many remote kitchens talking with people I have never met. Sounds scary looking back and I don't think I would want my kids doing this. None the less I met a lot of great people and learned a lot about my area.

I was there asking farmers what kind of old cars they had, once I was offered a '59 Vette for free! Big mistake for not taking that one! I found myself learning more about the land and how long these old timers have been there. It was fascinating to me, some of these people  were born on the property and never left.

MY FIRST LAND DEAL AND HOME

In 1993, my fiancee's Grandmother had a friend that lived on a golf course. John let her know that a for sale sign just went up on this empty piece of land next to him. At this time we were kind of looking but did not think about building. I drove to the land and was walking it. It did not seem much of anything to me, kind of small, but had trees and somewhere out there was the golf course. John, the neighbor and Theresa's grandma's friend walked on over. Introductions happened and he started to tell me the layout. John explained that he mowed into the property about fifty feet to keep the gophers out of his yard. Now I was interested. Since he kept up on mowing this exposed a beautiful walkout lot! ON A GOLF COURSE! Now get this.......$19,900!!!!  So what does a 21 year old who knows only a little about what land is worth do? Run, run fast to Mom and Dad! My parents were old school and thought that $20,000 was crazy to pay for 1.5 acres. The last home they build was the one I was born in and that was in 1972, So yes things had changed a little. I was not able to convince my Dad what a great deal this was. He found a lot next to a Turkey farm (Smelly Turkey farm) for the same price, this is the one he thought I should buy. One day after coming home from work my Dad showed me in the Newspaper, HAHA yes that is where you found homes back then, he saw two other golf course lots on the same course. They were smaller lots. List price of $37,000 and $39,000, Now he knows I might be on to something. I called the Realtor she told me the issues I made an offer!

I will explain the issues next week but I will let you know how I got this 1.5 acre, wooded, walkout lot with pond on a golf course for $9,000!
